Start by memorizing the sets of two numbers that add up to ten (3 + 7, etc.). Then memorize the sums of two "like" numbers (7 + 7, etc.) through 10 + 10. The same procedure applies to learning multiplication. Begin with 2 x any digit (2 x 4, etc.), then follow with "like" digits (4 x 4, etc.). These kinds of things need to be memorized well enough for very fast responses. These are the necessary first steps that will help ensure future success in math.
You can also belong to a study group. You can get sufficient help from your study group. You must be sure people in your study group have like minds as yourself. They must be students you know are capable of helping whenever you need help. It is of no use belonging to a study group where most of the students are below average. At least in a study group of six for example, four of the students must be above average.
The best way to treat many math problems is to first find the source of the problem and to adapt the instruction to concentrate on weak areas. Regular at-home math practice is absolutely critical during the first few years of a child's education, as at-home practice will serve to reinforce concepts and to allow children to move along at a faster pace. Practice is especially important during the holidays, the summer and during other breaks in a child's school year.
If your 4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th grade child is making poor grades in math, you may be able to help him or her. A little (20 minutes-two or three times a week) effort to find and correct deficiencies can pay off in a happier, more confident child and much less frustration in the household. Perhaps you lack the confidence to work with your child. Sometimes a brother, sister, grandparent or friend can serve as tutor. But if you do it yourself, you may surprised at your own math improvement as you proceed!
Attributing temperament personalities to the 4 processes helps a great deal toward a greater understanding as well as proper, successful use. Colorful costumes, along with stories and plays, characterize and illustrate each one's unique traits and the way they all interact. This can also be a first look at how math intersects and interconnects on a deep and vital level, while giving it a dynamic and interesting face that will easily hold any student's attention and interest.
Thirdly, the syllabus / scheme of work also help you to know your limit on any particular topic. When I say limit I mean areas you're not supposed to touch under any particular topic. For example, a second year secondary/college student is not expected to go beyond the use of measuring instruments to find angles of elevation and depression. The calculation aspect of this will be done later. So a misinformed student would waste precious time looking for ways to calculate angles of elevation and depression instead of measuring them.
Third grade math can be difficult for some children, as they're expected to draw upon their experience from K-2 to tackle relatively complex math problems including multiplication and division. As a parent, you should work with your child during this crucial period in his or her education, as struggling kids will undoubtedly continue to struggle unless they receive encouragement, differentiated instruction and plenty of practice.
