In an ideal world, every student would be able to receive one-on-on instruction to optimize his or her learning experience. However, this is rarely possible in a modern classroom setting where there can be over twenty students and only one teacher with no aids or helpers on hand. This high ratio of students to teachers can make teaching 2nd grade math even more difficult. But online math games are designed to move at the personal pace of each child who plays.
Introduce each of the numbers in the first grade, attending to each one individually by using stories and images that capture its unique essence. Devote a full teaching block of three to four weeks to the numbers 1-12 by telling and illustrating classic stories about such relevant subjects as the sun for the number 1, or bees and a beehive for the number 6. This is an investment that will yield a lasting and positive relationship with math for all of your students, while insuring the overall success of your homeschool math curriculum.
Before tackling your child's math problems, it's helpful to understand the curriculum and why certain types of math lessons are difficult for young children. 3rd grade math curriculum typically includes multiplication and division, which children often struggle with. Kids will have especially pronounced problems when multiplying and dividing if they've had problems with addition and subtraction in the past or if they simply haven't spent much time practicing these basic skills. Children may also have trouble seeing the patterns in multiplication tables, which will make it much more difficult for them to keep up with their classmates. Multiplication tables can be difficult to approach and kids who understand the relationship between division and multiplication will be able to absorb lessons much more easily.
