Start by memorizing the sets of two numbers that add up to ten (3 + 7, etc.). Then memorize the sums of two "like" numbers (7 + 7, etc.) through 10 + 10. The same procedure applies to learning multiplication. Begin with 2 x any digit (2 x 4, etc.), then follow with "like" digits (4 x 4, etc.). These kinds of things need to be memorized well enough for very fast responses. These are the necessary first steps that will help ensure future success in math.
Traditional teaching methods have a lot of merit, which is why textbooks, worksheets and chalkboards persist in todays classrooms. Along with engaging and effective teaching methods, these tools can provide kids with the building blocks that they need in many subjects throughout their early school careers. But with technology now being an integral part of everyday life, it can be beneficial to add math games for first graders to the elementary school curriculum.
Laying a strong and positive foundation in your homeschool math first grade curriculum is essential. Regrouping or recouping interest and confidence in math later, once it's been lost, is challenging to downright impossible. It's so much wiser and better to establish a warm, friendly relationship from the start. This shouldn't be fuzzy or unfocused however. There is much to be found in the heart and at the roots of math that can naturally arouse interest and even affection!
